Access to abortion is an essential piece of allowing women to be in control of their own health and reproductive decisions. In 2010, the Center for American Progress published a comprehensive report on the Hyde Amendment’s impact on women of color. “Separate and Unequal” made a contribution to the body of work around reproductive health, rights, and justice—contextualizing the intersection of race and ethnicity, economic disadvantage, reproductive discrimination, and access to abortion. Since the report’s publication, the landscape of abortion access has changed. There has been real progress with the passage of the Affordable Care Act, or ACA. A record number of women have health insurance coverage and are able to access well women’s care and preventive services at no cost.
