President Joe Biden announced a new plan to end hunger and reduce obesity in the U.S. by 2030 at a Wednesday gathering of civic, business and philanthropic leaders.

Biden’s plan is backed by $8 billion in private and public sector funding, including $2.5 billion for food access start-up businesses and $4 billion for philanthropies to improve food access, promote healthy diets and encourage exercise. As part of the effort, the Food and Drug Administration will propose a standardized front-of-package nutrition labeling system. The Biden administration also plans to expand SNAP benefits and free school meals. However, some analysts cited by Politico (Lean Left bias) questioned whether a Republican-controlled House of Representatives would pass any legislation contributing to Biden’s plan.

10.2% of U.S. households were “food insecure” in 2021, the U.S. Department of Agriculture found, meaning they “had difficulty at some time during the year providing enough food for all their members because of a lack of resources.” Biden’s conference is the first of its kind since former President Richard Nixon’s 1969 White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health.

Most major right-rated outlets did not cover Biden’s hunger plan on Wednsday, instead focusing on a moment where Biden appeared to think deceased Republican congresswoman Jackie Walorski was attending the conference; headlines often featured the quote, “Where’s Jackie?”. Coverage was common but not always prominently featured in left and center-rated outlets.

The Biden administration on Wednesday hosted the a conference on hunger, nutrition and health, the first such conference the White House has hosted in more than 50 years.

Speaking at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center, President Biden called for the U.S. to build on the measures passed under his administration meant to improve financial security for families, such as the expanded child tax credit and the Inflation Reduction Act.

More than $8bn has been pledged by private corporations and non-profit groups to help Joe Biden achieve his goal to end hunger and cut diet-related diseases, White House officials announced on Wednesday.

Donors include food industry lobby groups, pharmaceutical companies, the world’s second largest meat packing company, medical associations, a film studio, as well as philanthropic foundations and universities.
