Democrats won competitive Election Night contests in several states on Tuesday.
Virginia: Democrats maintained their majority in the state Senate while flipping the House of Delegates. The results are seen as a blow to Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R), who will now have a harder time advancing his conservative agenda through the state legislature.
Kentucky: Gov. Andy Beshear (D) won a second term, defeating challenger Daniel Cameron (R) with 52% of the vote. Beshear built his campaign around expanding abortion access in the state, which currently bans most abortions.
Ohio: Roughly 56% of voters voted “yes” on Issue 1, a ballot measure to enshrine abortion rights into the state’s constitution. Republicans had tried to raise the threshold from a simple statewide majority vote to 60%, but the attempt failed in early August.
How the Media Covered it: Sources across the spectrum framed the results as great news for Democrats and bad news for Republicans. Many left-rated sources suggested the results proved that voters support abortion rights, and framed it as a losing issue for the right.
