Voices across the political spectrum are reflecting on Friday’s ruling from a New York judge ordering former President Donald Trump to pay $355 million in fines.
More Harm Than Good? A writer in CNN Opinion (Left bias) stated, “While Friday’s ruling seems like a significant setback for Trump, it more likely will end up as a defeat for the legal system.” Citing opinion polls showing a large percentage of Americans believe some of the indictments against Trump are politically motivated, the writer determined that the former president’s legal battles are damaging the public’s trust in the legal system. Also arguing that the judge in Trump’s New York fraud trial “stretched the law in problematic ways,” the writer concluded, “public officials have done more damage to the law than to Trump, pushing too far in their efforts to punish the former president.”
Political Overkill? The Wall Street Journal Editorial Board (Lean Right bias) called the verdict “political overkill.” The board agreed that Trump is guilty of fraud, writing that the former president’s “casual relationship to the truth has come back to bite him,” but argued the punishment is “like using a Hellfire missile to annihilate a shoplifter.” The board criticized New York Attorney General Letitia James, who campaigned on going after Trump, accusing her of “choosing a target and then hunting for something to charge him with, which is an abuse of the law.” The board concluded that the ruling “ought to worry fair-minded people regardless of political bent.”
