Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) received criticism for calling Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R), who uses a wheelchair, "Governor hot wheels".
The Details: In her remarks at a Human Rights Campaign event, Crockett said, “We in these hot a** Texas streets, honey. Y'all know we got Governor hot wheels down there, come on now. And the only thing hot about him is that he is a hot a** mess, honey!” Abbott is paralyzed and has used a wheelchair since his 20s. In response to the criticism, Crockett claimed she was referring to Abbott's policies, not his disability, when she made the comment.
For Context: Crockett responded to criticism in a post on X, saying she was thinking about his policy to “transfer migrants into communities led by Black mayors, deliberately stoking tension and fear among the most vulnerable.” She also wrote, “I’m even more appalled that the very people who unequivocally support Trump—a man known for racially insensitive nicknames and mocking those with disabilities—are now outraged."
How the Media Covered It: Townhall's (Right bias) headline reads, “Jasmine Crockett Mocked a Disabled Governor. Now She's Backtracking.” The Hill (Center) wrote, "it’s not the first time Crockett has been embroiled with Republicans," referencing an interaction she had with Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) in which they made comments "about each others’ appearance" on the House floor. The HuffPost (Left bias) began its article saying Crockett “insists she wasn’t mocking” Abbott and described her as one of “Democrats’ top insult comics.”
