Democrat Katie Hobbs is projected to beat Republican Kari Lake in the 2022 Arizona gubernatorial race.

Key Quotes: "Democracy is worth the wait," Hobbs said on social media. "Arizonans know BS when they see it," Kari Lake tweeted on Monday night.

For Context: Katie Hobbs has been serving as Arizona Secretary of State since 2019, and is known for opposing the 2020 Arizona election audit. Kari Lake is a former television news anchor who promoted false claims that the 2020 election was stolen, and she was endorsed by former President Donald Trump. The results were called by NBC News (Lean Left bias), CNN, Fox News (Right bias), and The Associated Press (Lean Left bias) on Monday night, but a recount is possible within the next few days if votes are separated by 0.5 percentage points.

How the Media Covered It: Some right-rated outlets, such as Washington Examiner and Fox, highlighted how Lake's defeat might not be finalized for days or weeks as the final votes are counted, and how the race may go to a recount. Some headlines from left- and center-rated outlets described Lake as an "election denier" or a "Trump favorite."

Katie Hobbs, Arizona’s Democratic election chief who built a national profile by standing up to false claims about the 2020 presidential election, has won the state’s race for governor.

The Associated Press, NBC News and CNN called the race for Hobbs shortly after 7 p.m. Monday, following a nail-biter week of election returns that highlighted the competitiveness of politics in the state.

"Democracy is worth the wait," Hobbs posted on social media before issuing a statement thanking her family, volunteers and staff for their work.

Democrat Katie Hobbs will win Arizona’s governor’s race, CNN projects, defeating one of the most prominent defenders of former President Donald Trump’s lies about the 2020 election.

Calling the 2020 election rigged, Republican Kari Lake had repeatedly said she would not have certified Joe Biden’s win in Arizona in 2020. Hobbs, as Arizona’s secretary of state, had rejected GOP lies about the election.
