Why it matters: "The problem is that the DNC and Joe do not want Joe debating RFK Jr. or anyone else, and it's a real problem," he told Axios during an interview.

"I've come out and said, I think that people should be running in a more competitive environment against Joe, even though he is the sitting president because I think that that would be a positive thing."

CNN’s Jim Acosta confronted former presidential candidate Andrew Yang on Sunday over his tweets criticizing the FBI’s Trump raid and alluding that the execution of the search warrant was politically motivated. Asked if it sounded as if he was letting former President Trump “off the hook,” Yang backpedaled, claiming “extremism is on the rise in this country” and pivoting to promoting his new political party. “I don’t think you answered my question,” Acosta responded.

Andrew Yang announced Wednesday that his Forward Party is merging with a coalition of Republicans, Democrats and independents as part of an effort to give Americans an alternative to the two major parties.

Why it matters: Yang says the new party, known as Forward, is now the third-biggest political party based on resources. Founding members hope it will serve to bridge the stark divide in U.S. politics.

A group of ex-Republicans and Democrats has announced the formation of a third party, the latest effort to break the duopoly that has dominated American politics for more than a century.

Co-chaired by former Democratic presidential and New York mayoral candidate Andrew Yang and former Republican New Jersey Gov. Christine Todd Whitman, the “Forward” party is pitching itself as an alternative for centrists dissatisfied with the state of the two major parties.

A new political party, named Forward, launched Thursday. 

The party, which describes itself as a centrist party, is being co-chaired by former Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang and former Republican New Jersey Gov. Christine Todd Whitman.

It is being established to "reinvigorate a fair, flouring economy and open society where everyone can live a good life and is safe in the place where we learn, work and live," according to its website.

After George Bush's presidency, fewer people called themselves Republicans. After Obama's, fewer called themselves Democrats.

Andrew Yang, former presidential hopeful and 2021 candidate for mayor of New York City, announced his official departure from the Democratic Party on Tuesday, ahead of the expected launch of his new third party. 

In a statement on his website, Yang described the “strangely emotional” experience of changing his registration to become an independent voter after having been a Democrat since 1995.
