Former US President Donald Trump has sued the writer E Jean Carroll for defamation, alleging she falsely accused him of rape after a jury found he sexually abused her.

Last month, the civil jury in New York found he sexually abused and defamed the columnist but did not rape her.

Mr Trump's claim, filed on Tuesday, relates to comments Ms Carroll made on CNN a day after that verdict.

When asked about Mr Trump's liability for rape, she said "oh yes he did".

Former President Donald Trump filed a counterlawsuit against author E. Jean Carroll on defamation charges for accusing the former president of raping her.

Trump's lawyers filed the countersuit in the fight in which Carroll is accusing him of defaming her by denying her claims that he had raped her in a New York department store in the 1990s.

A federal judge scheduled E. Jean Carroll’s second defamation trial against former President Donald Trump for January 2024, just days before Republican primary voters will begin the presidential nomination process.

On Thursday, U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan set Carroll’s civil trial against Trump for January 15, 2024, in a brief scheduling order.

The scheduling comes days after Kaplan allowed Carroll to amend her second defamation lawsuit against Trump to seek up to $10 million in damages.

Just one day after a New York jury found former President Donald Trump liable for sexually battering and defaming the writer E. Jean Carroll, awarding her $5 million in damages, he appeared on CNN and attacked her again, calling her a “whack job” with a “made-up story.”

On Monday, Carroll’s lawyers filed to request that those remarks be included in her remaining defamation case against Trump.

The jury decided that Trump was not liable for rape, but was liable for sexual abuse and defamation. The jury awarded Carroll at least $2 million. 

The six men and three women on the jury began deliberating Tuesday morning on the ninth day of the civil trial, which took place in Manhattan federal court.
