McDonald’s is scrapping many of its diversity, equity, and inclusion programs. The move is part of a larger trend of corporations rolling back DEI commitments made during the Black Lives Matter riots of 2020 and their aftermath. McDonald’s cited a “shifting legal landscape,” referring to last year’s Supreme Court decision outlawing affirmative action in college admissions, for its reasoning. Specifically, the company will end diversity quotas at senior levels and end a program that pushes suppliers to develop DEI training.

McDonald’s on Monday reported quarterly earnings and revenue that missed analysts’ expectations as same-store sales declined across every division.

Here’s what the company reported compared with what Wall Street was expecting, based on a survey of analysts by LSEG:

Earnings per share: $2.97 adjusted vs. $3.07 expected

Revenue: $6.49 billion vs. $6.61 billion expected

McDonald’s new $5 Meal Deal debuts Tuesday. For the next month, customers can get a McChicken or a McBurger, four chicken nuggets, a side of fries and a small drink for less than the price of a single Big Mac. The highly publicized, limited-time promotion seems to mark a change in the battle over inflation â€” and it’s a sign that, finally, people — and the government — are successfully fighting back against rising prices.

McDonald's has informed franchisees that it is ending an artificial intelligence drive-thru order taking program, a report says.

In a message obtained by Restaurant Business magazine, McDonald’s USA Chief Restaurant Officer Mason Smoot said "after a thoughtful review, McDonald's has decided to end our current partnership with IBM on AOT [automated order taking] and the technology will be shut off in all restaurants currently testing it no later than July 26, 2024."

A knife-wielding madman, connected to a murder investigation, attacked four girls inside a movie theater before injuring two others at a McDonald’s during his stabbing spree on Saturday.

The unprovoked attacks began around 6 p.m. inside the AMC Braintree 10 when the armed suspect walked into the complex, past the ticket booth and entered one of the theaters without paying.

The suspect stabbed the four girls, whose ages ranged from 9 to 17, without saying a word, Braintree police said Saturday night.

Fast-food chain Burger King will be debuting a new value meal ahead of schedule as competitor chains launch meal deals of their own.

"We are bringing back our $5 ‘Your Way Meal’ as agreed upon with our franchisees back in April," a spokesperson for Burger King said on Thursday, May 23.

The news was first reported by Bloomberg News.

Fast food workers in California will benefit from a minimum wage rise that is due to come into effect in a week's time—but franchises have warned that its implementation could force them to increase their menu prices.

On April 1, fast-food restaurants will be required to pay employees at least $20 an hour, up from $16 as of January and $15.50 in 2023. The new law, signed by Democratic California Governor Gavin Newsom in September, will also see minimum wages for health care employees go up from June 1.

McDonald’s suffered a system failure on Friday that left many customers in many parts of the world unable to order food.

A spokesperson for the Australian unit of the fast food chain reportedly said it was working to resolve the issue as soon as possible. McDonald’s Japan took to social media site X to say that operations at stores nationwide were temporarily suspended.

“We apologize for any inconvenience caused to our customers,” it said.

McDonald’s Chief Executive Officer Chris Kempczinski has said that the company’s business in the Middle East is being affected due to the war between Israel and Hamas and associated "misinformation" about the fast-food chain’s position on the conflict.

The world’s largest burger chain, as well as other top chains such as Starbucks, have become the target of boycotts over their perceived pro-Israeli stance and alleged financial ties to Israel.
