U.S. consumers put a lid on their spending to kick off 2025, potentially indicating weaker economic growth prospects.

According to Census Bureau data, retail sales tumbled by 0.9 percent in January after increasing by 0.7 percent in December 2024.

The consensus forecast suggested a 0.1 percent drop.

Last month’s decline was the sharpest drop since March 2023, and market watchers attributed the lackluster consumer spending to harsh winter weather...

U.S. retail sales dropped by the most in nearly two years in January, likely weighed down by frigid temperatures, wildfires and motor vehicle shortages, suggesting a sharp slowdown in economic growth early in the first quarter.

But the larger-than-expected and across the board decline in retail sales reported by the Commerce Department on Friday probably does not reflect a material shift in consumer spending as it also followed four straight months of hefty increases...

U.S. retail sales dropped sharply last month, in part because cold weather kept more Americans indoors, denting sales at car dealers and most other stores.

Retail sales fell 0.9% in January from the previous month, the Commerce Department said, after two months of healthy gains. It was a much bigger drop than economists expected and the biggest decline in a year.

Multiple THC vapes have been voluntarily recalled in Michigan after the Cannabis Regulatory Agency (CRA) found they contain an oil that could potentially harm lungs. The BLOOM Classic and BLOOM Live vape cartridges allegedly include Medium Chain Triglyceride Chain (MCT) oil, which has led to the recent recall of several vape cartridges, according to a report from affiliate FOX 2 Detroit. D.E.A. WARNS GEORGIA TO CANCEL PLANS TO BECOME FIRST STATE TO ALLOW PHARMACIES TO SELL MEDICAL MARIJUANA While MCT oil, a non-THC oil, is commonly found in oral supplements...

Liberated Brands filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection over the weekend and is looking to shutter its U.S. retail stores where it sold brands like Quiksilver, Billabong and Volcom. The company said in a Monday press release that it filed for bankruptcy to "implement an orderly monetization and disposition of its businesses." It submitted a motion to the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware for the closure of about 124 stores as part of its bankruptcy proceedings. Liberated estimated a range of $100 million to $500 million for...

Jordan Bass, CEO and co-founder of Hop Wtr, a non-alcoholic beverage brand, reduced his salary to $1 to provide immediate financial support to his employees, first responders and Los Angeles community members who were affected by the wildfires in January. Headquartered in Los Angeles, Hop Wtr team members were forced to evacuate their homes, uncertain of what they might return to. "Work took a backseat during that period," Bass told FOX Business. "We're a small company, so I have personal relationships with everyone in the company. I know all of...

McDonald's opened a longstanding diversity program to all races and ethnicities last week following a lawsuit from a legal group opposed to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) practices. The lawsuit was filed by American Alliance for Equal Rights (AAER), an organization dedicated to challenging race-based preferences and discrimination. AAER argued that the fast-food chain’s HACER National Scholarship Program was discriminatory against non-Hispanic/Latino students as the program required applicants to have at least one parent of Hispanic/Latino heritage.

Target announced on Friday that it is scaling back its policies following President Trump's executive order to review such initiatives. The move adds Target to a growing list of companies scaling back or eliminating their DEI efforts as these programs come under increased scrutiny. Kiera Fernandez, Target's chief community impact and equity officer, said in a note to employees on Friday the retailer will implement changes as part of its "Belonging at the Bullseye" strategy that adapts to the evolving external landscape. This includes concluding its three-year DEI goals and...

Georgia officials have confirmed the state's first case of bird flu, halting all in-state poultry exhibitions, shows, swaps, meets, and sales until further notice. A poultry producer in Elbert County on Wednesday noticed signs of avian flu in their flock, according to the Georgia Department of Agriculture (GDA) and the United States Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service. Samples were tested and confirmed by the Georgia Poultry Laboratory Network and USDA’s National Veterinary Services Laboratory.

The popular coffee chain Starbucks is putting the kibosh on its open door policy, and will now only welcome paying customers to hang out and utilize the restrooms at its stores. In a letter directed to store managers and above, which the company provided to Fox News Digital, Starbucks executive vice president and president of Starbucks North America Sara Trilling noted, "we are establishing a new code of conduct that will be displayed in every store. This is common practice, and makes clear that our spaces, including our cafes, patios...
