While his fellow candidates in the Republican primary took the debate stage Wednesday night, GOP frontrunner and former President Donald Trump held a rally at an auto parts factory in Michigan.
Details: Trump’s rally in Michigan comes one day after President Joe Biden visited a UAW picket line in Michigan. The United Auto Workers union is currently striking the “Big 3” auto manufacturers. The New York Times (Lean Left bias) was quick to point out that Trump spoke at a non-union factory, also noting that two attendees carrying “Union Members for Trump” signs said they were not union members. Union members are a hotly contested voter bloc. While Democratic candidates more often get endorsements from union leaders (the UAW has not yet endorsed a candidate), Trump found success in 2016 and 2020 pulling union members into the Republican camp.
Key Quotes: “Get your union leaders to endorse me, and I’ll take care of the rest,” Trump told attendees. UAW President Shawn Fain, who appeared with Biden on the picket line Tuesday, has said another Trump term would be a “disaster.” Criticizing the Biden Administration's push for increased electric car production, Trump said, “The auto industry is being assassinated. It's a hit job on Michigan and on Detroit. ... All of these cars will be manufactured in foreign lands that you couldn't care less about.”
How the Media Covered It: Trump’s rally was largely eclipsed in coverage by the second Republican debate Wednesday night, but received moderate coverage across the spectrum.
