On Tuesday, voters will cast ballots for federal, state, and local elections in Montana, New Jersey, and New Mexico. There will also be state and local elections in South Dakota and Washington, D.C.

Key Details: In these final primaries, former President Donald Trump will appear on the ballots for the first time since his felony conviction on May 30th. Both Trump and President Joe Biden are expected to easily prevail in the contests, though some protest voters may vote for Nikki Haley, rather than Trump, and some may vote "uncommitted" in protest of President Biden's handling of the war between Israel and Hamas.

For Context: Biden and Trump clinched their party nominations back in March despite some protest votes. "Uncommited" votes have notched 30 delegates against Biden so far, and Nikki Haley has received tens of thousands of votes, highlighting fractures within both major political parties.

Senate Races: In Montana, Democratic Sen. Jon Tester is fighting to hold onto his seat against U.S. Army and Navy veteran Michael Hummert so he can face Republican businessman Tim Sheehy in November. In New Jersey, in the seat being vacated by Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez (who may run as an independent in November), Democratic Rep. Andy Kim is expected to win his party's nomination. Trump-backed Mendham Borough Mayor Christine Serrano Glassner will face three other candidates for the Republican nomination.

How the Media Covered it: Sources across the political spectrum noted the possible impact of protest votes by both Republicans and Democrats.

Donald Trump’s name will appear on the ballot Tuesday for the first time since his historic conviction on felony crimes as a handful of states hold the last Republican presidential primary contests of 2024.

The former president will be on the ballot in Republican contests in Montana, New Jersey and New Mexico. President Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic nominee, will compete in primaries in the same states, plus the primary in Washington, D.C., and one in South Dakota.

The 2024 presidential primary calendar is drawing to a close, with the last of the state contests set for Tuesday.

Voters in Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico and South Dakota will cast ballots in the presidential race — and, along with Iowa, weigh in on key state and local races down the ballot. Washington, D.C., will hold its Democratic presidential primary, and two more Democratic contests in Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands will close things out the following week.

Voters in five states and Washington, D.C., head to the polls Tuesday, where they will decide a host of presidential and congressional primaries.

Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico, and South Dakota voters will decide who will win the Democratic and GOP presidential primaries, although President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump have already clinched the nominations.
