Christopher A. Wray, the F.B.I. director, warned senators on Tuesday that the violence between Israel and Hamas has raised the potential for an attack against Americans in the United States to “a whole other level.”
“We assess that the actions of Hamas and its allies will serve as an inspiration the likes of which we haven’t seen since ISIS launched its so-called caliphate several years ago,” Mr. Wray said, referring to the Islamic State.
Several foreign terrorist organizations have called for attacks against Americans since Oct. 7, when Hamas gunmen carried out gruesome attacks against Israel that killed more than 1,400 people, Mr. Wray said. The Islamic State, also known as ISIS, called for attacks on Jewish communities in the United States and Europe; Hezbollah, the Lebanese militant group, threatened to attack American interests in the Middle East; and Al Qaeda also issued a specific call to attack the United States, Mr. Wray said.
