A judge on Friday ordered former President Donald Trump to pay $355 million in fines and barred him from participating in business in the state of New York for three years.
For Context: In 2022, New York Attorney General Letitia James sued Trump and other members of the Trump family for fraudulent business practices, accusing them of inflating the worth of properties in order to acquire more favorable bank loans. The trial did not have a jury, leaving the verdict solely in the hands of Judge Arthur Engoron.
Details: In addition to the fines and business ban on the former president, Engoron ordered Trump’s sons, Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr., to pay more than $4 million in fines and banned them from serving as officers or directors in a New York business for two years.
Key Quotes: Engoron stated that the “defendants are incapable of admitting the error of their ways,” adding that the Trumps’ “complete lack of contrition and remorse borders on pathological.” Alina Habba, one of Trump’s lawyers, said they would appeal the verdict, labeling it “manifest injustice — plain and simple.”
How the Media Covered It: The New York Times (Lean Left bias) called the verdict a “career-defining victory” for James and a “crushing defeat” for Trump. The New York Post (Lean Right bias) stated the verdict “put a dent in Trump’s carefully groomed image.”
