The Salvadoran government on Wednesday rebuffed Sen. Chris Van Hollen’s (D-Md.) request to meet or speak with a wrongfully deported Maryland man, the senator said, accusing the Trump administration and others of lying about Kilmar Abrego Garcia’s gang ties.

Van Hollen said Salvadoran Vice President Félix Ulloa told him the government had no information connecting Abrego Garcia to MS-13 but could not accommodate a visit to the notorious CECOT prison, known by its acronym in Spanish.

Maryland Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D) said he is traveling to El Salvador on Wednesday to check on the status of a deported legal resident.

Kilmar Abrego Garcia made headlines after being removed by the Trump administration in an “administrative error” and sent to El Salvador’s notorious CECOT maximum security prison to be detained.

“Following his abduction and unlawful deportation, U.S. federal courts have ordered the safe return of my constituent Kilmar Abrego Garcia to the United States,” Van Hollen said in a Tuesday statement.

Nayib Bukele, El Salvador's president and self-styled "world's coolest dictator," is due to visit President Trump at the White House on Monday. He's the first Latin American leader to get an official invite to the Oval Office since Trump took office.

Officials in the Dominican Republic have raised the death toll from the catastrophic roof collapse at the Jet Set nightclub in capital Santo Domingo to 184, as hopes of finding survivors fade and the rescue operation turns to recovery.

Local media quoting the country’s emergency operations director, Juan Manuel Mendez, reported on Thursday that at least 184 people had died in the accident. Mendez also stressed that it was a “preliminary figure”.

Greenland will strengthen its ties with Denmark until it can become a sovereign nation, the Arctic island's incoming prime minister told Reuters on Monday, noting that the semi-autonomous Danish territory ultimately wants to become independent.

Jens-Frederik Nielsen, 33, was sworn in as prime minister of Greenland on Friday and will lead a four-party coalition government amid challenges posed by U.S. President Donald Trump's ambitions to control the island.

One of the Venezuelan migrants who is believed to be among the latest group sent to El Salvador on Sunday night was in Guantanamo Bay and had a final order of removal, according to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).

Maiker Espinoza Escalona was the lead plaintiff in one of the Guantanamo cases brought by the ACLU against the Department of Homeland Security filed last month. His partner is currently detained in a detention center in Texas and his two-year-old daughter is in HHS custody, according to the ACLU.

At the heart of Argentina’s chronically crisis-prone economy is a political system that encourages unconstrained public spending and overregulation in the extreme. It is the system set up by Juan Domingo Perón in the 1940s that strengthened in subsequent decades, and that President Javier Milei promised to cut down with a chainsaw and replace with classical-liberal policies of the kind that made his country one of the most prosperous in the world a century ago.
