Looming elections across North America could upend a decades-long integration process as the continent’s three major nations face sharp choices between populism and traditional liberalism.

The interactions among Mexican, U.S. and Canadian leaders stand to shape the political and economic future of a free trade zone with complex and profitable supply lines and consumer markets on one hand — and increasingly fortified borders on the other.

The first US commercial flight to Haitian capital Port-au-Prince in months made a bleak roundtrip on Thursday morning, returning with the bodies of a young American couple who were killed by a gang last week.

The remains of Davy and Natalie Lloyd were accompanied in an American Airlines jet by US Ambassador to Haiti Dennis Hankins and US security agents, according to a source with knowledge of the operation. After flying from Haiti to Miami, they will be sent onward to their families.

Don’t even go there.

The United States has renewed its “Do not travel” warning for Venezuela, urging American travelers to understand that their government “has no ability to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens” who run into trouble.

Officials blamed the notice — the most severe the Department of State can issue — on civil unrest, a “slide towards dictatorship,” ongoing threats of terrorism, and anti-American bias.

Mexican authorities say two Australians and an American were killed on a surfing trip because thieves wanted the tires from their truck. Relatives of those killed confirmed their identities on Sunday, the Associated Press reported.

The latest details in the case come after a fourth body was discovered during a search for the missing men in Baja California. State prosecutors have not officially confirmed the identities of the missing men, but have said the victims’ family members are viewing the bodies to see if they can be identified by sight.

Do you want to be Canadian? Quebecers may get to choose if the Parti Québécois wins the 2026 provincial election, as PQ Leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon, who is currently leading in the polls, has pledged to hold a referendum on sovereignty if he becomes premier.

Polls suggest that roughly one in three Quebecers would vote to leave Canada. But federalists should not get too comfortable, as this is around the same proportion of Quebecers who indicated they would support sovereignty in 1994, only for the province to reject it by less than one per cent a year later.

The majority of Canadians and Americans do not trust the United Nations, according to a new poll.

The Leger survey for the Association for Canadian Studies (ACS) and the Metropolis Institute was conducted about four months after Hamas attacked Israel on Oct. 7, 2023. Since then, the UN has been under fire for its response to the attack, and for a UN agency’s alleged connections to the Hamas terrorists.

According to the survey, only 38 per cent of Canadians and 30 per cent of Americans trust the UN.

A candidate for mayor of a violence-wracked city in Mexico has been killed just as she began campaigning. Two authorities in the north-central state of Guanajuato said candidate Bertha Gaytán was shot to death on a street in a town just outside the city of Celaya. Mayorships in Mexico often included smaller surrounding communities. The authorities were not authorized to be quoted by name. Video of the scene posted on social media showed a small procession of people shouting "Morena!" — the name of Gaytán's party. At that moment, several...

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has announced the recall of almost 285,000 Dodge Chargers and Chrysler 300 vehicles because of an issue with the curtain air bag inflators. The inflators on both the right and left sides of the vehicles may cause the bags to rupture, the NHTSA said. The recall affects some 2018 to 2021 Chargers and Chrysler 300s Dealers will replace both side curtain airbags for free. Owners will receive letters about the issue after May 3. For more information, owners can contact FCA US, LLC directly...

Americans sprang forward Sunday in the controversial annual tradition of daylight saving time, prompting over a dozen senators to re-up their push to “lock the clock” and make the change permanent.

“We’re ‘springing forward’ but should have never ‘fallen back.’ My Sunshine Protection Act would end this stupid practice of changing our clocks back and forth,” Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) said last week as he renewed his efforts to end the practice.
